![]() Notes on the some of the advantages of shooting with a digital camera.
Being able to show friends and relatives photos on my lap top after my return has been wonderful and much appreciated. So much better than sitting in the dark watching a slide show or handing round prints.
With the 1.6x factor it was possible to photograph a polar bear which was only visible clearly through binoculars. I used a 50-500mm Sigma lens with 1.4x convertor then cropped the image in Paint Shop Pro and enlarged a section. Only one hour after taking the photograph I was able to include the image in a show to the passengers using a data projector. (see above for photo)
I was able to capture photos of an Inuit fur fashion show with the pop up flash (I have no large flash unit for the camera). Even at 800 ISO The images were very dark but I brought them back to life by adjusting them +10 brightness and +10 contrast continuously together in Paintshop pro until they looked good.
Being able to select 100 - 1600 ISO for a single image made it possible for me to shoot in low light levels. I was able to crop in on the most photogenic part of a sunset using a 500mm lens shooting at 11pm from my cabin window by selecting 400 ISO.
Using a 1GB card I shot on RAW fitting 130 images on one card. Images were downloaded and converted to 18mb Tiff files. The quality of the pictures are considerably better than the jpegs I took in Antarctica. (Quality is much reduced on website)
I could label all the wild flowers I photographed back in my cabin using a borrowed book as soon as I had down loaded them. Having the photos in front of me made identification easy. It also saved time in the field and saved the borrowed book from being damaged in my over full backpack.
Shooting digital enabled me to give presentations only one hour after returning from a trip to shore or Zodiac cruise.
I was able to load digital images of the trip onto my website as soon as I returned without using a lengthy scanning procedure.
I only used my film camera when I thought images could be used by photo agencies. I took 34 rolls of 36 exposures which isn't much for me. I'd taken 100 rolls with me as I am heavy on film. This represented a good saving on film.
